Culinary Washington is not Political Washington, and thank goodness for that. But there’s always something intriguing at the intersection of the two, like the julep, a drink we associate with hats and horses. It’s a specialty of the Round Robin Bar at the Willard Hotel — according to lore, the place we can blame for the word “lobbyist” — where, in the early 1800s, statesman Henry Clay introduced it to the city. The beautifully-appointed bar has been making the drink for nearly 200 years now. Think of it as a lesser-known monument, dedicated to a time when political compromise could be brokered over a drink.
